I SEE that ITV are to make a three-part TV drama about Cilla Black starring Sheridan Smith as the vocally-challenged heroine. I hope she can sing, because Cilla certainly couldn’t.
Unfortunately for those of us who grew up in the 1960s, the programme-makers have promised to “capture the essence of 1960s Liverpool”.
Personally, I had enough of it then. Just as I’d become inured to the saturation coverage of the repetitive songs and infantile antics of The Beatles, this appalling girl singer burst on to the scene and, with her adenoidal bawling, ruined some perfectly good songs.
I’ll certainly give the programme a miss.
