REGARDING calls for an inquiry into the miners strike (Echo, Jan 10).
Previously secret papers, published at the turn of the year under the 30-year rule, not unnaturally give rise to mining communities’ concerns as to how the whole affair was managed by those in power, not forgetting the consequences for miners’ families as they rightly protested vigorously to protect their livelihoods.
Those who acquired criminal records (sadly some will have in the interim departed this life) may well need their cases revisiting.
I trust the Lib Dems will support the Opposition MPs’ early-day-motion call urging an investigation into the strike, the management of the mining industry and the correctness or otherwise thereof.
Eamonn Murtagh, Sedgefield.
