I WAS both surprised and disappointed to read that Dale Benkenstein’s career with Durham has ended with his departure to Hampshire (Echo, Feb 14).
His on-field contribution to Durham County Cricket has been immense.
Whether batting, bowling, fielding or captaining the side he was usually able to make a significant contribution. I would go as far as to say that he is the best all-round cricketer ever to have played for Durham.
In his case, the stats don’t tell the full story because most of his best efforts have taken place when his side have been really struggling.
As a captain he has been inspirational.
In cricket, the best player is usually captain, but the best captain is often the player to whom the rest of the team look to for inspiration.
Anyway good luck to him in his new post, he will be missed.
