SHAME on you Chris Lloyd, Red Barnes in is Redcar, in Kirkleatham Street, not near Redcar (Echo, Feb 8).
It is a Philip Webb House, designed and built by Mr Webb for Gertrude Bell’s father because his wife was rather frail and they thought sea air would do her good. Gertrude helped set out the garden, she was very fond of roses.
Unfortunately, it has been badly mutilated over the years and is about to have yet another transformation.
Let us hope the forthcoming film will be good and stick to her life.
Gertrude Bell was a truly remarkable woman for her time, there was nothing she couldn’t do. Redcar has always been proud of her.
Mary Carter, Redcar.
