ON a walk in the Cleveland Hills last week, I was amazed at the integrity of the old Skelton Park iron ore mine, near Guisborough.
It’s crying out for renovation as a living museum, after the style of Beamish, and would be a big attraction.
Middlesbrough would not exist without the discovery of iron ore in those hills in 1850.
Over the next century, hundreds of miners gave their lives as the North-East became the world’s leading steel producer.
Their stories are remarkable; they even had to buy and look after their own explosives. Surely a museum at Skelton Park would be a fitting tribute?
