I WOULD like to pay tribute to Bill Pertwee, the former Dad’s Army actor who died last week (Echo, May 29).
During rehearsals for the Dad’s Army stage show at the Forum, Billingham, and later in London, at the Shaftesbury Theatre, I got to know Bill.
I found him a good artist and a most friendly character.
As happens in life I was to meet him only once more in London, but I’ll never forget him and the rest of the team.
In particular, I have fond memories of the times we had a get-together after the first night in London and on the occasion of the night the Dad’s Army cast appeared at the Royal Command Performance.
In his excellent book on Dad’s Army, Bill pays a brief but very nice tribute to my Forum team and myself.
