THORNABY Town Hall was built in 1892 to reflect the tremendous pride in the hearts of the Thornaby residents in attaining borough status and to be the new home of the municipal borough council.
The building work was funded by a 25-year loan paid for by our ancestors through the Thornaby Corporation tax.
During a period of political change, the ownership was transferred to Teesside Borough Council then to Cleveland County Council and eventually on to Stockton council.
In the financial year 2012-13 Thornaby Town Council again purchased the town hall from Stockton Borough Council on behalf of the Thornaby community by taking out a 25- year loan funded through the Thornaby parish precept.
How many times do we, the residents of Thornaby-on-Tees, have to pay for ownership of our town hall?
Can we trust that the ownership of the town hall will not be given away on a politician’s whim in the future?
I think there should a referendum if any further major changes are planned for our town hall.
Geoff Green, Thornaby.
