IF we had taken notice of Steve Pratt’s very prejudiced review of iShandy, at York Theatre Royal (Echo, Apr 26), we may well have decided not to go.
But we are so glad we did.
Okay it did not have a beginning, middle and an end but so what?
It was a wonderful production filled with wit and humour.
Congratulations to the writer, Richard Hurford, and the director Damian Cruden.
The six skillful actors played a riot of characters. It was fast paced and very, very funny in a Monty Python-esque way.
Mr Cruden’s comments in the notes, that iShandy makes no sense whatsoever is a joke Mr Pratt.
The small audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show and we came out smiling and uplifted. We did not see anybody walk out early.
Thanks to the Theatre Royal in York for putting on this modern and ambitious take on Laurence Stern’s book The Life And Opinions Of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.
A final plea – please do go and give it a try. We are sure you will enjoy, in a way that Steve Pratt could not.
Gill Parsons and George Theaker, Darlington.
