I AM a volunteer at the Singing for the Brain sessions at Spennymoor, and as Father Peter Anderton says, we often end up laughing (Echo, Nov 27).
It is amazing the effect that singing familiar songs has on those living with dementia.
At the beginning of each session, Fr Peter’s wife, Barbara, leads a “loosening up”
session of gentle hand and foot exercises.
One newcomer last week sat still throughout this, with a look of detachment on his face, but our second song obviously meant something to him, and it was if a light had come on. By the time we gave out the tambourines and shakers a couple of songs later, he was happily joining in with the rest with a big smile on his face.
We sing anything and everything (or try to!), from Vera Lynn to the Beatles.
Our next meeting is tomorrow at 1.30pm in St Andrew’s Church Hall, Spennymoor, when it is our Christmas party, so we’ll be singing traditional Christmas songs and carols.
Everyone is welcome, but if you’re bringing a group for the first time, from a nursing home etc., please let us know in advance (0191-275-1950), as we’ll need to order more mince pies!
