I’M rather confused about the effect a new police commissioner will have on policing in County Durham. The four candidates have all declared their positions.

Michael Costello, the Ukip candidate, says he is wants to stop the police becoming politicised. Surely he is instrumental in this since he’s not a police officer?

Ron Hogg, the Labour candidate, says he’s an expert in policing football matches. What use will that be in County Durham?

Kingsley Smith, the independent candidate, advocates a zero tolerance towards criminals. What does that mean?

Nick Varley, the Conservative candidate, says his priority will be to cut crime. How would he do it?

I would like to be more positive about the appointment but can’t help feeling that there will be few benefits to the community and that the position will come at a considerable cost to tax payers.
