What was your first car?
I had a couple of bangers, but my first half-decent car was a white Triumph 2000 which cost me £130. I didn’t realise it had such a big engine and I went all the way from Manchester to South Wales in third gear.
How many times did it take to pass your test?
It took me four goes to pass my test with a bona-fide driving instructor and it was in a Ford Escort. But that is not as bad as my sister, Mary, as it took her seven goes. In fact, there’s only two types of pedestrians when our Mary’s on the road - the quick and the dead!
Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?
I’d like to have the head of the police as my passenger and then when I’m pulled over, I would love to see the Bobby’s face when I went to roll the window down.
What is your dream car?
It’s got to be an Aston Martin and I’d be ‘James Bond Cricket’ – the man with the golden wellingtons!
How would you describe your driving style?
Over cautious to say the least. I passed my test to be an advanced driver and I learnt from that to talk to myself as I’m driving along. Of course, if you’ve got company in the car, well, that’s bad mannered.
Tell me one driving anecdote from your past?
During the seventies when we used to do a lot of doubles in showbusiness – that mean’s doing two clubs in one night – I came out of one called the Garrick Club in Leigh, Lancashire, only to find my car had been nicked. So I had to get the barman of the club to drive me to St Helens to do the second club!
What are you listening to?
Well I like to listen to BBC Radio 3 and hope I can learn a little about classical music. But when Mrs Cricket is in the car it’s Michael Bolton, above, and when the grandkids are in it's Disney and The Muppets.
What do you drive now?
It’s a Kia Carens. I love it because it has automatic gears and has a sensor at the back in case you bump into things – two things I didn’t have in my last car which was a Kia Sedona and I missed both of those features terribly.
