Oh no, oops, sorry. It's not an attack by a silly man advertising a fizzy drink. Those bright orange blobs and stripes are really the result of your tanning moisturiser. They are the big new products of this summer, body moisturisers with a hint of a tint in them.
Apply them daily, say the ads, and you'll soon build up a natural-looking sun-kissed glow.
Sounds brilliant. Fake tan only subtle, we thought. Well, maybe not.
Thinking of them as moisturisers, we dolloped them on and woke up to a nasty shock - those orange stripes, abrupt lines and drip marks that we hadn't seen since the early days of cheap self-tanning lotions. So from then on we were more careful...
HOW NOT TO GET TANGOED l Apply gently, especially if you have very fair skin.
l Rub in smoothly and thoroughly l Try not to leave any "edges".
PROBLEMS Some were very orange. Some had too much colour. Some were very sticky. Some didn't smell nice. Some of them faded unevenly - so after a few days you had pale stripes and spots.
BONUS When we had a bit of sun a couple of weeks ago - remember? A few days when you thought it was summer and we all got slightly pink. We used these creams then too and they had a really good effect. They lifted the natural colour without looking too artificial. Brilliant.
WARNING Stop when you're winning. Don't use it every day. Otherwise you might look as though you glow in the dark.
OUR FAVOURITES Dove Summer Glow £4.25 for 250ml L'Oreal Nutrisummer £6.99 200ml Nivea Body Sunkissed Skin £5.65 for 200ml Olay Everyday Sunshine £3.99 200ml All these were reasonably subtle. And weren't too orange. Because of that, they went on fairly easily and evenly. The Dove came in two different formulas for light and darker skin. They were all also effective moisturisers, soaked in quickly and left skin feeling quite good. They also smelled nice.
WE QUITE LIKED Johnson's Holiday Skin Body Lotion £4.78 for 250ml This went on very smoothly, but is not one to use too often on fair skin as it eventually goes very orange. It was OK on darker skin.
WE DIDN'T LIKE.
Garnier Summer Body £5.65 for 250ml Arrghhh! We went orange overnight. Not a pretty sight. Very strong colour. Very difficult to apply evenly. None of our testers, all with different skin colour, liked this one.
Superdrug Sunkissed Skin £3.99 for 2 x 250ml Orange and sticky. Also very strange smell.
WE ALSO TRIED Boots Holiday Glow Facial Moisturiser £4.99 for 40ml Boots Botanics Facial Moisturiser £4.99 for 75ml Frightened after our 'Tango' experiences, we were very careful with these. I mean, who, apart from Tony the Tiger, wants a bright orange stripey face?
Maybe we were too careful as we could see no perceptible difference after we'd used them. But we didn't like them as moisturisers as they felt very sticky.
