Coronation Street (ITV1, 7.30pm and 8.30pm).

ALAN BRADLEY tried to push Rita under a Blackpool tram. Jon Lindsay’s deceptive ways put Deirdre behind bars. And Richard Hillman murdered three people and tried to kill several more by driving them into the canal.

Coronation Street has had its fair share of baddies but none perhaps more devious than cobbles killer Tony Gordon.

His problem is that the woman who knows his dirty little secret – that he arranged for Liam Connor to be run over and killed a year ago – is back in Weatherfield.

He arranged Liam’s murder after he had an affair with his wife-to-be, Carla.

“What’s going through Tony’s mind now Carla is back and what’s going through my mind are very different,” admits Gray O’Brien, who has played Tony since September 2007.

“I’m very happy Alison King is back, because it’s absolutely great working with her. Tony, though, isn’t quite so pleased to see her. It’s going to mess everything up.”

Since Liam’s death, Tony has struck up a romantic relationship with Liam’s widow, Maria.

“He had no intentions of anything happening with Maria, but it’s happened and they’ve fallen in love and they’re going to get married. Carla coming back is a disaster,”

says O’Brien.
