IT is 50 years since Roy Ward Dickson hosted a little Canadian show that became one of TV’s biggest success stories.

The format for Mr and Mrs was so universal it was not long before it was snapped up over here, with Derek Batey hosting one Border TV version from 1964 to 1980, and Alan Taylor hosting an HTV version during the same period.

There were a couple of attempts to reboot the series in the 1990s, but by 2008, ITV bosses decided celebs were the key to the show’s success, and All Star Mr & Mrs was born.

Tonight, Corrie’s Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Stape) and partner Chris Farr compete, along with former Olympian Sally Gunnell and fellow athlete Jon Bigg, and The Only Way Is Essex stars Joey Essex and Sam Faiers.

The winners could bag £30,000 for their chosen charity.
