ON May 4, Sheffield Wednesday played their final game of the season against Middlesbrough. That relatively happy day was in stark contrast to events just over 24 years ago when, on April 15, 1989, Britain’s worst football disaster took place at Hillsborough's West Stand, at the Leppings Lane end of the stadium.

Ninety-six Liverpool fans were killed as a result of a crush, with 766 more sustaining injuries. In December last year, following an inquiry by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, the original verdict of accidental death for the 96 who perished was overturned; a new inquest will take place next year.

The documentary Hillsborough: How They Buried the Truth, reports on why various investigations into what happened on that tragic day in 1989 failed to reveal the truth.
