HOW to be a Lady: An Elegant History is not another reality-telly effort helmed by the likes of Rosemary Shrager whipping tomboys into shape.
However, while former editor of Lady magazine Rachel Johnson knows a thing or two about this age-old subject, she is keen to find out a lot more, and so heads off on a mission to find exactly what it takes to be a lady.
She researches times when it represented a specific dress code and behaviour, to the current day, considering why terms such as ladylike remain in our vocabulary.
Johnson gets some hands-on experience too, being given the opportunity to ride side-saddle and attend etiquette school.
She also discovers where the gymslip was invented, learns how to open and close a door correctly, and things get personal when she visits her grandmother’s own Ladies’ College, in Cheltenham.
