WHO’D have thought they’d find Richard III under a council car park in Leicester?
But it’s looking good – they’ve found a body of someone obviously quite posh – well-built, well-nourished – with a bashed-in head and an arrow in his spine, the way you would if you died in battle. What’s more, he even had one shoulder higher than the other – just like Richard Crookback was meant to have.
Once they’ve found out if it really is him, they’re planning to rebury him in Leicester cathedral.
Probably better than a car park.
But wouldn’t it be even better still if they brought Richard back North?
We knew him best and we liked him up here. He was popular in the North when he ruled it on behalf of his brother, Edward IV. And, of course, Richard grew up in Middleham, said to be his favourite place.
If it really is Richard, wouldn’t it be marvellous to bury him at Middleham?
Bring him home. Back among friends.
It might bring a few more tourists in too...
