EVERY parent will understand the feelings of guilt expressed yesterday by the parents of missing Madeleine McCann.
Whatever happens now, Kate and Gerry McCann will always have to live with the consequences of leaving their four-year-old daughter in their holiday apartment while they ate dinner nearby.
Millions of parents will be examining their consciences in the light of Madeleine's abduction and many will privately admit that they have taken similar chances.
No one ever believes that something so rare and terrible could happen to them, and this agonising episode is a reminder that it simply isn't worth taking any risks.
But Mr and Mrs McCann must take heart from the fact that the overwhelming reaction around the world is not judgemental but one of understanding, sympathy and admiration.
Given what they are going through, it is incredible to watch their courage being played out on television screens every day.
Privately, their torture can only be imagined, but in public they have displayed a determined dignity to find their daughter and carry on as normally as possible for the sake of their other children.
By keeping the media spotlight shining brightly on the story, maybe - just maybe - a clue to the whereabouts of this lovely little girl may yet emerge.
It is impossible not to look back with regret - but it is much more important to look forward with as much hope as can be mustered.
Our thoughts are with them.
