ONE of the bonuses of this grandparenting lark is the books – rediscovering old friends such as Burglar Bill, Alfie and Annie Rose or The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
But then there are all those new books written since the boys put away childish things.
Maeve, 15 months, came to stay for the night accompanied by a much-loved copy of The Gruffalo.
Which is why, 15 years after it was written, we finally caught up with his terrible tusks and terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws. Brilliantly read, of course, by Grandad. Wonderful.
Children’s books are just too good to be kept just for children.
