There is the unlikely prospect this winter that blackouts may happen to help supplement energy supplies in the UK.

As reported by The Metro, the National Grid has said it believes its winter supplies are "adequate" but if the electricity supply is put under too great a strain then power outages would be required.

The way in which it would be decided what order the power outages go in is based on the Government's Electricity Supply Emergency Code document, which was last updated in 2019.

How you can reduce your energy bills

Each property in the UK is included in a power block which work like postcodes, assigned to an individual area.

Each power block is assigned a letter between A and U, except for the letters F, I, and O, which are not used.

In planned blackouts each power block will have designated time without power, depending on the severity of the electricity shortage.

Not every house in one area will be in the same power block so an area isn’t in a complete blackout at the same time.

How to find out your power block

Your power block will most likely be included on your energy bill, which will be located in a box near the top of the page.

If it is not included on your energy bill you will need to contact your energy supplier to find out what it is.
