TEESSIDE University is preparing to celebrate annual National Student Volunteering Week.

Students and staff are getting involved both on and off campus by taking part in a range of activities, including volunteering recruitment fairs and visits to Daisy Chain, as part of Volun-Tees.

Jayne Villiers, the university volunteer co-coordinator with Volun-Tees said: “We have seen even more students actively engaging in volunteering within the local community and on University projects.

“It’s also great to incorporate ideas and projects suggested by students which gives students more opportunity to lead, develop and support projects they are passionate about.”

Students are setting up their own events as well.

Media students Leonie Garlick and Jade Owens have set up a tea party as part of the week, from February 24 to March 2, in aid of Teesside charity “Being Children” which helps children in India.

The two set up the “My Little Charitees” blog as a charity project in which students were able to produce free videos for charities in exchange for work placements.

Miss Garlick said: “I started the blog because I was interested in helping others but we realised that not enough students were getting video work experience.

“We wanted to help so we were able to work with Volun-Tees to provide students with this chance.”
