A PARK and a new road bridge are planned for the Middlehaven area of Middlesbrough which has already secured regeneration projects worth more than £140m.
Residents and people who work in the town are now being asked for their views on the latest developments.
The 42-hectare site is already home to a number of projects including the expanding Middlesbrough College and rapidly growing ‘Boho Zone’.
Proposals in the pipeline for later this year include the creation of a new park to improve the surroundings of the Transporter Bridge as well as a road bridge over the dock to improve access across the whole of the site and help boost more regeneration.
The Middlehaven Development Framework is now subject to a four-week public consultation until Monday, June 17.
Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “Middlehaven is a unique location which has a vital role to play in the future of not only Middlesbrough, but the whole region.
“Middlehaven will always have proud links to this town’s industrial heritage, and the projects currently taking shape will take the town forward into the 21st Century.
“It has real momentum now, but new opportunities will continue to present themselves and so it’s vital that we take on board the views of local people in shaping that future.”
Nearby Middlesbrough College is investing up to £20m in a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Centre of Excellence and is expanding its sixth form.
The Boho Zone, home to creative companies, will soon welcome Boho 5 between Windward Way and Bridge Street East with the potential to create hundreds of jobs.
Work is also underway at the £8m Gateway scheme, which will provide rehabilitation facilities and accommodation for people with neurological conditions.
Boda Gallon, Chief Executive of the Keiro Group which specialises in healthcare, said: “The Gateway is a truly innovative service collaboration that captures and shares Middlehaven’s vision and vitality.
“The project has brought together cutting edge design, health, housing, education, creative industries and exciting wellbeing opportunities for the whole community. It is a true landmark service for Middlesbrough and Teesside.”
The Middlesbrough Development Framework and feedback form can be downloaded from Middlesbrough Council’s website at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk. Paper copies are also available in the town’s civic centre, central library and Myplace youth centre.
