ACTOR and comedian John Thompson made a surprise appearance at a stand-up gig when he rekindled one of his best known characters.
The Fast Show and Cold Feet television star performed at the ARC in Stockton on Saturday night at a sold-out show headlined by Jason Cook.
Mr Thompson is returning to his stand-up roots after 12 years with a series of low-profile concerts. To the delight of the crowd, he brought back to life his Perrier-winning character, Bernard Righton, at the venue which also featured Phoenix Nights star Justin Moorhouse and Lee Kyle. from Newcastle.
Speaking backstage after the show, Mr Thompson said: “That was just a joyful gig, and the audience were absolutely lovely.
“I’ve always loved stand-up, terrifying before the gig sometimes, but I really feel at home when I get onstage. And that was the best gig since I’ve started playing again. I absolutely loved it.”
Peter Vincent, of promoters Ten Feet Tall, said: “Jason introduced him as Bernard Righton, and you could almost feel the audience gasp when they realised who it was. And then the cheering started and didn’t stop for the rest of the night.
“John was absolutely brilliant. He made it look far too easy, and went down an absolute storm with a crowd who loved him to bits.”
Jason Cook added: “I’ve said it before, but ARC is my favourite gig in the world. So it was a genuine thrill to be able to bring a proper legend like John to Stockton. Just an amazing night all round.”
