Liz Truss has been named as the new leader of the Conservative Party and the next Prime Minister and Twitter had plenty to say.

The former Foreign Secretary will replace the outgoing Boris Johnson after pipping Rishi Sunak to the post after a Conservative leadership contest.

The announcement came today (Monday, September 5) at the QEII Conference Centre in central London on the same day Parliament returns.

In her acceptance speech, Liz Truss thanked her supporters and joked about "the longest job interview in history" before outlining her policies.

Unsurprisingly, social media has had a strong reaction to the news.

Ahead of the result, one view predicted: "I'll take a guess that Liz Truss is the new Prime Minister. That'll be one of the least surprising results for some time."

Following the announcement, another wrote:" Liz truss new prime minister? f*** this im goin dubai"

A second person passed on their best wishes:" Congratulations to @trussliz for being elected new leader of @Conservatives party & the next PM @10DowningStreet! The popular social media app BeReal went off during the announcement with many viewers actually learning of the news via the anti-Instagram platform.

Many users called for the new PM to take quick action on the likes of the Cost of Living Crisis alongside other piling problems.

One user posted:" Now that Liz Truss is the new Prime minister, can we go back to focusing on energy prices and the cost of living crisis? Let's leave the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan to their charities."

Truss becomes the third Conservative prime minister since 2016, when David Cameron quit after losing the Brexit vote, and will oversee a party that remains bitterly divided about the legacy of Mr Johnson and its future direction.

Voting closed last Friday and the contest drew to an end when the formal announcement was made by Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbench MPs.

Following a standing ovation, she thanked the Conservative party members who she described were part of the "greatest political party on earth".

Concluding her speech, she promised to “deliver a great victory” for her party in two years’ time.

The new Tory leader said: “We all will deliver for our country and I will make sure that we use all the fantastic talents of the Conservative Party, our brilliant Members of Parliament and peers, our fantastic councillors, our MSs, our MSPs, all of our councillors and activists and members right across our country.

“Because my friends, I know that we will deliver, we will deliver and we will deliver.

“And we will deliver a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024.”
