THE UK’s first Asian principal of a general further education college is retiring.

Dr Sujinder Singh Sangha, 62, pictured right, became principal of Stockton Riverside College in 2002, making him the first Asian principal of such a college in the UK.

It was also the start of a major period of change for the college, including a £55m investment plan.

During Dr Sangha’s time as principal, the college completed the development of premises at its Teesdale campus in 2002, including vocational and higher education campuses.

He also led the merger with Bede Sixth Form, in Billingham, and was principal during the development of the £12m sixth form building and Stockton college sports centre, recently opened by The Duke of York.

Dr Sangha’s 45-year career did not start in education. He left school at 17 to work as a quality inspector in a metal company in the Midlands.

He continued his education through part-time courses and distance learning and after 14 years in industry, he changed career and became a further education lecturer.

Miriam Stanton, deputy principal at Stockton Riverside, will be acting principal until a new principal is recruited.
