A NEW work of art celebrating the achievements of the oldest surviving lifeboat, the Zetland, was unveiled at the weekend.
Local artist Philip Boville has depicted the wreck of the Jane Erskine, which was the subject of one of the more dramatic rescues by the Zetland lifeboat and took place within sight of land at Redcar in 1854.
The painting celebrates the 210th anniversary of the lifeboat, which carried out its first rescue in 1802.
The Marquess of Zetland unveiled the painting on Saturday in front of local councillors. Afterwards the Marske Fisherman’s Choir sang a selection of their favourite shanties.
The painting will hang on the ground floor of the Zetland Lifeboat Museum on Redcar seafront.
The Zetland saved more than 500 lives in 67 years service at Redcar.
