A HOUSING association has started work on building a number of much-needed properties to help meet local demand.
Erimus Housing has started work on the development in Billingham which will involve 18 homes being built in Low Grange Avenue.
The homes are going up on the former site of Derwent House, an outdated sheltered scheme of 25 flats that was demolished in 2009.
Now 12 two-bedroom bungalows, four two-bedroom houses and two three bedroom houses will replace the development.
Chris Smith, managing director of Erimus Housing, said: "We are really pleased to be building in Billingham.
We have worked in partnership with Stockton Borough Council to develop the plans for this site, which is in a great location in the town.
"We are looking forward to seeing it progress and welcoming the first new residents into these high quality homes."
The homes, which have received £450,000 of Homes and Communities Agency funding, will be some of the first developed for affordable rent by Erimus Housing.
