A CHARITY has won an award for its efforts in helping victims of domestic violence.
Catalyst, in association with Stockton Borough Council, presented the Stockton branch of the Harbour charity with the Biggest Health Impact award at a ceremony on Wednesday.
Harbour operates a number of refuges across the Teesside area and offers shelter, advice and support to victims of domestic violence.
It also offers outreach programmes and services designed to help perpetrators of domestic abuse.
Harbour's Stockton refuge can shelter to up to eight women and their children.
Workers there help families with issues arising from the effects of domestic violence, assisting them with matters such as housing, supporting them in regaining independence and offering education and support to affected children.
Service manager Lesley Hill, who has worked with the charity for six years, said the work has a positive impact on the health of families.
She said: "Domestic violence has a knock on effect on health.
"Research has shown high incidents of mental health problems, alcohol and drug dependency and sexually-transmitted diseases among victims of domestic abuse.
"They are also more likely to suffer miscarriages, skin complaints and diseases of the immune system.
"Living under the anxiety of domestic abuse can have an incredibley negative impact on general health.
"Dealing with it and having someone to support them will have an impact on their health for the better.
"We are delighted that our work in this area has been recognised."
