POLICE are urging people to keep their bags and purses secure as shopping centres get busier.
On Tuesday, purses were taken from the handbags of two elderly women and cash stolen in Tesco, West Dyke Road, Redcar.
The purses were later found in a bin outside Asda in South Bank, where there had been a further incident of theft of a purse the same day. The purse was not recovered.
Inspector Helen Barker, of Redcar police, said: "As Christmas draws closer and the shops attract more visitors, it is important to think about preventing yourself from becoming a victim of theft.
"Keeping handbags and purses close to you and within sight, and securing any zips or other fastenings can deter an opportunist thief."
Anyone with information regarding the purse thefts is is asked to call police on 01642302626 or 0800-555-111.
