A TOWN renowned for its steel works will be getting in touch with its nature.

Children's crafts, woodworking demonstrations, willow weaving and bulb planting will be taking place at Charlbury Community Centre, next Saturday, from 11am to 3pm.

The event is being organised by the Boro Becks team, a three-year project by Middlesbrough Council, the Environment Agency and the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust.

Activities will also involve creating an outdoor trail along Middle Beck and an opportunity to help artist Cheryl Baines create a Boro Becks tree wall hanging.

The becks in Middlesbrough - Ormesby Beck, Marton West Beck, Spencer Beck and Middle Beck - flow through the town and meet the Tees. They are home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered water vole.

Boro Becks community outreach officer Chris Corbett said: "Trees are such an important part of our beck landscapes, cleaning our air, providing food and shelter for wildlife and marking the seasons.

"This event is the perfect way to learn more about our beck trees and enjoy them before the winter sets in."
