A TOWN'S only grade I-listed building could be turned into a hotel with a medical centre and more than 50 homes in its grounds.
Plans have been submitted to transform Acklam Hall, in Middlesbrough, which has stood empty for three years.
Originally built by William Hustler as a family home, the 17th Century mansion has been in public ownership since 1935, occupied by Kings Manor School and then Middlesbrough College until students moved into a new campus in Middlehaven.
Acklam Hall Ltd, based in St Brelade, Jersey, has been selected as the preferred developer following an extensive period of consultation between the applicant, Middlesbrough Council and English Heritage.
In a statement accompanying the plans, the developer said: "The proposals as described in this statement have been driven by the primary requirement to ensure the longterm conservation of the hall, and improve its setting in the landscape, so its historical significance can be fully appreciated."
Conservation area consent and listed building consent are being sought to demolish Thirties' school buildings, which are to be replaced by a modern two-storey extension.
"Two alternative uses are being considered for the hall, " the developer said.
"The first option would be a hotel with conference facilities, the second would be a restaurant and conference facilities together with offices on the upper floors. With either alternative, the proposed eastern extension may form a part of the overall use."
The ambitious scheme also includes the construction of a nursing home, 56 residential properties, a doctor's surgery incorporating two medical practises, and car parking.
As co-owners of the hall, Middlesbrough College and Middlesbrough Council have jointly footed the £86,000 bill for 24-hour security, which was stepped up in January to manage risks to the site.
The plans and associated documents associated with applicationsM/CAC/1044/11/P, M/LBC/1045/11/P and M/FP1046/11/P can be viewed in the development control office at the Civic Centre, next to Middlesbrough Town Hall, by contacting case officer Shelly Vickers in advance on 01642-729462 or emailing shelly_vickers@middlesbrough.gov.uk.
Plans can also be viewed online by visiting middles brough.gov.uk. They will also be on display in Acklam Library for about three weeks.
