A PAIR of poets will take centre stage at Hartlepool Central Library tomorrow.

Diane Cockburn, who is well-known on the poetry circuit and has seen her work published by Arrowhead Press, will take to the stage at 6.30pm, alongside retired teacher Tom Richardson.

She will be reading from Electric Mermaid, which she promises "will make you laugh aloud."

Her work has been likened to that of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll, taking the listener through a narrative that has serious or menacing twists and turns, as well as the absurd.

Mr Richardson said: "Poetry is alive and well in the North-East, where there is keen interest in both established and new writers."

He will be reading from The Whale Was My Desire, poems from Mudfog Press.

They are about far off places and the North-East, about history and surgery, and about loss and music.

On Thursday, November 3, there will be more poetry for Teesside enthusiasts to enjoy when Swaledale poet Felicity Manning launches her latest work at Sassari, 193-195 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough. The event is scheduled to begin at 6pm.
