THREE nursing teams from a North-East hospital trust have been shortlisted for national awards.

Nursing staff a the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are in the running for the Nursing Times team of the year title and also have two finalists in the children, adolescent, maternity and neonatal category.

Nurses on the young people's unit at The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, have been nominated for their work to make services more young people friendly as part of the You're Welcome initiative.

Ward 21 was the first inpatient unit nationally to receive the You're Welcome quality kitemark. It has since developed its own young persons' group and has involved young people on interview panels for new staff members.

Staff of the children's wards have also been nominated for developing a scheme called Ten Steps to Safer Medication, which has helped to minimise medication errors.

Nursing staff a the trust are also in the final of the team of the year category thanks to the introduction of the We Inspire They Aim High training initiative in the endoscopy department.

The winners will be announced on November 2 at London's Hilton Hotel, in Park Lane.
