A REVAMPED study area is to be named in memory of a long-serving employee.

The local studies area at the Central library in York Road, Hartlepool, which assists people with their research into local and family history, is to be named after Mary Hoban.

She began working for Hartlepool libraries in 1959 and, after qualifying as a librarian, she was appointed as the town's reference librarian in 1967, a post she held until her sudden death in 2004.

Graham Jarritt, Hartlepool Borough Council's libraries and community manager, said: "Mary's contribution to life in Hartlepool was unique, encompassing Hartlepool Archaeological and History Society, Hartlepool Music Society, the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce and more. Naming the local studies area after Mary would be a fitting way of recognising and thanking her."

An opening ceremony for the Mary Hoban Centre for Local Studies is expected to take place in September.
