THE perils of messing about on railway lines and in rivers was brought home to nearly 1,000 children on Tuesday.

Primary schoolchildren from Redcar and east Cleveland also had the chance to talk about crime in the annual Crucial Crew event. Experts from different agencies met the pupils at Eston Sports Academy for the popular annual event.

As well as learning important safety lessons, the children took part in a consultation exercise about crime and anti-social behaviour.

Councillor Steve Goldswain, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's cabinet member for community protection, said: "Crucial Crew is always a popular event and we hope that the many young people attending will take on board the invaluable safety measures it sends out."

Various agencies and institutions, including the police, The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, and Cleveland Fire Brigade took part in the event.
