PUPILS at a Teesside school have designed a badge and uniform to declare a new start for their school.

St Peter's RC College of Maths and Computing in South Bank, Middlesbrough, was told it would have to close.

Parents, children and staff fought back before losing an appeal. But they were overjoyed when the Government announced an 11th-hour reprieve last December.

Now, headteacher Pam Hanrahan has ordered a new logo, new uniform and new badge for the school.

She said: "We asked the students to design the badge which included the keys of St Peter and the white rose of Yorkshire. We also did the uniform design in-house. It's very smart and it hasn't cost a lot of money. We wanted to do it for the people around here, the whole community, who fought so hard for our school. It's a way of celebrating our school."

The uniform will be used from September and was officially unveiled at a graduation night this week attended by councillor George Dunning, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

When St Peter's was due to close, many students were to be moved to an expanded Sacred Heart RC School, in Redcar.

But the £2.7m expansion of Sacred Heart was scrapped in a cost-cutting exercise and the move called off.
