A NEW training centre is opening in Stockton to give young people the chance to learn about all aspects of travel.
Children and young people with disabilities can develop independent travel skills at The Independent Travel Training Centre, based at Abbey Hill School and Technology College, in Stockton.
It has been set up by the school and Stockton Borough Council, and is funded through Aiming High For Disabled Children.
The centre has been laid out on the existing school site using the existing road markings.
There are three types of crossings, two sets of traffic lights, bus shelter, bike shed, raised curbs and other street furniture.
A dedicated travel trainer will work with children and young people across the borough to promote road safety and train them to travel independently.
It will also be available to all primary school pupils to carry out bike ability training and road safety training.
Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "It is the only one of its kind in the borough and by using the existing school site, the road and transport infrastructure is already in place for the young people to learn in a safe and supervised environment."
