A FORMER Royal Marine commando who served in three wars has been given the go-ahead to bring a new fitness craze to Teesside.
Lee Howes, 28, has served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, but now wants to introduce people to a fitness method he learnt while working is the US called Crossfit.
He plans to set up his gym on the Teesside Industrial Estate, in Thornaby, after he was granted permission by Stockton Borough Council's planning committee on Wednesday.
After eight years in the Marines, Mr Howe, of Ingleby Barwick, went back to Iraq as a private security operative looking after British Embassy staff and consulates, and then did the same for the US Government.
It was during this time he discovered Crossfit, which is said to be very popular with Americans.
According to Mr Howes, who is a level one qualified instructor, it combines several fitness disciplines, such as power lifting, gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, rowing and running.
Speaking tomembers of the planning committee, he said: "The health and fitness benefits are phenomenal. It's suitable for all ages and is so addictive. This is an opportunity I strongly believe in."
Councillors agreed to give the scheme the go-ahead, despite planning officers recommending it for approval on the grounds that it should be in a town centre location.
Mr Howes said there were 35 Crossfit gyms across the country and traditionally they run out of industrial units because of the extra space and high ceilings.
There were 45 letters of support for the application received and no objections.
Councillor Steve Walmsley said: "There have been no objections and I think everyone agrees there are huge benefits.
"Anyone setting up a business should be given help and I support this wholeheartedly."
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Howes said: "I am very happy.
"It was just amatter of common sense."
He hopes to have his business up and running this summer.
