THE lives of unsung sporting heroes could be lit up if they are chosen to carry the Olympic torch.
Nominations are being sought for worthy contenders who could be a part of a historic ceremony when the flame arrives in the UK from Greece on May 18, next year.
Middlesbrough has been announced as one of 70 evening celebrations for the torch relay. The flame will come to the town on June 17, next year, when an evening of entertainment will be held.
In total, 8,000 inspirational people are needed to each carry it 300 metres on its journey to the Olympic stadium in London.
Nominations should be for people who inspire and support others and give up time to support their community.
Councillor Brenda Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for public health and sport, said: "The London Organising Committee will try to ensure that people who get to carry the torch do so in and around the area where they live.
"There are hundreds of inspirational people in Middlesbrough and the wider Tees area, but they need nominations in order to have their chance to shine."
People can nominate themselves, or someone in their community, through the London 2012 website london2012.com/OlympicTorch Relay by June 29.
