A MUSEUM cafe is serving up an authentic menu of Anglo-Saxon cuisine.

The amazing story of the life and death of a Seventh Century princess will be told at Kirkleatham Museum, Redcar, when an exhibition opens tomorrow.

The venue is preparing to showcase unique archaeological finds unearthed in Loftus, between 2005 and 2007, including jewellery that would have formed part of the princess' royal burial.

And the museum's Lillies cafe is getting into the spirit of the occasion by rustling up some unusual dishes.

Museum curator Alan Pearce said: "The museum has been completely transformed to give people as realistic an insight into AngloSaxon life as possible and we were keen for the cafe to reflect this too."

An Anglo-Saxon princess lunch menu offers chicken stew with barley and fresh herbs, roasted roots and steamed greens, pancakes with berries and a herbal tisane drink for £6.50 per head.

A special dinner, at £17.50 per head, is also available for parties of a minimum of ten guests on pre-arranged preview evenings.

This menu includes nettle soup, jellied fish, roasted suckling pig, honey nut berry crumble and warm mead.

Cupcakes, in princess themed cases, are also available.
