A TRADITIONAL sport is making a welcome return to a social club more than ten years after the last quoit was thrown.
Lazenby Social Club is resurrecting the historic sport as a way of maintaining community spirit in the village, near Redcar.
Quoits is one of the most ancient games played in the North of England and is reputed to have been played in the reign of King John (1199-1216).
Club secretary Brian Jackson believes the return of the team will help attract young people to the sport.
He said: "We are hoping to resurrect quoits in the area and, since we built the new pitches at the front of the club, it has really attracted a lot of interest.
"We have enough players for two teams, but more people are welcome to come along and join in the fun."
The club has joined the Cleveland League and plays its first game against Elm Tree, in Stockton, tomorrow. Anyone interested in playing should call into the club and try their hand at the sport.
