A BURIED cemetery has been toured for the first time by a local historian.
Ayresome Cemetery, once one of Middlesbrough’s largest graveyards, was the final resting place for about 11,000 bodies.
The site, which was decommissioned in 1962, now lies beneath Ayresome Gardens off Linthorpe Road.
Historian Steve Waller, who has made a detailed study of the burial ground, believes the intricate lay-out of the cemetery is layered with religious and spiritual symbolism.
Mr Waller is calling for a blue heritage plaque to be erected in recognition of its historical importance.
He shared his insights this week with the Healthy Stepping Out walking group.
Archivist Ann Thirsk, from Teesside Archives, said: “The design of the cemetery is unique, and Steve’s work has ensured it will not be lost in the mists of time.
“This was a hugely important site in Middlesbrough and it deserves to be recognised by future generations
