AN iconic landmark could be transformed into a top tourist attraction to help celebrate its centenary.
Improvements to the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough include installing glass viewing lifts and modernising the gondola carrying vehicles across the River Tees.
Plans follows last year’s grant of more than £110,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to kick-start the Transporter Bridge Major Improvement Programme.
That was the latest stage towards a full bid for over £2 million which will be used to create major improvements to the Grade II Listed bridge which marks its 100th birthday on October 17.
The views of local people are being sought before detailed plans will be submitted for the full grant amount.
The two-week consultation starts on Monday, January 24, with displays on the planned improvements on show in the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre until Friday, February 4.
The exhibition will move to Middlesbrough Central Library on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29, when members of the project team will be on hand to explain and discuss the proposals.
The restoration project is being managed by engineering specialists Arup.
The fictitious plot in the third series of the hit television show, Auf Wiedersehen Pet, centred on dismantling the structure and moving it to Arizona in America.
Anyone who would like to comment on the proposals can send their views to David Grattan at Arup via email at David.Grattan@arup.com by Friday, February 4.
