A CAMPAIGN to combat anti-social behaviour in Hartlepool has been taking place this week.

Police have been targeting troublemakers in Burn Valley Gardens and the surrounding area as it has been identified as a nuisance hotspot.

Increased patrols have been trying to engage with persistent offenders in the hope reducing the problem.

Police are visiting local retailers who have a license to sell alcohol in the area, to ensure the Challenge 21 scheme is being correctly applied and they are monitoring underage drinkers who regularly approach adults to buy alcohol for them.

It is hoped that this approach will help to improve the quality of life for local residents and reassure the community that anti-social behaviour will be not be tolerated.

Sergeant Glen Westmoreland, of Hartlepool police, said: "We hope that increased and targeted patrols will educate people on how their actions may be affecting the quality of life for others, but persistent offenders can be sure that we will also look to use the necessary enforcement measures where appropriate."

Improvement works have been taking place throughout the week, including cleaning of the area, repairs to pedestrian barriers, new road markings, graffiti removal and removal of potential arson materials.
