HUNDREDS of people are backing ambitious plans for a Great Park in Greater Eston.

Consultants have talked to 20 local groups and got the views of over 200 people in face-to-face interviews about the scheme.

The park is to be created on the former Eston Recreation Ground and a team of consultants have been commissioned by Redcar and Cleveland Council to bring in ideas.

Team member David Potts, a community regeneration specialist, said: "There has been a very positive response with some very good discussions and plenty of ideas and suggestions.

"Many remember the Rec with great fondness but recognise there is now an opportunity to create a new park for the 21st century."

Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, the council's cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism said: "We've always said we would consult and involve local people in decisions about the area and ensure peoples views are heard and acted upon.

"This is exactly what is happening with this project and I am pleased to hear the consultation is being so well received."

A two-day exhibition on the emerging ideas for the park will be held at the City Learning Centre, Eston on Friday, January 29 from 10am-8pm and Saturday, January 30, from 10am-4pm.
