A NEW footpath connecting three popular green havens in the heart of Middlesbrough is to be officially unveiled this week.

The footpath joining Newham Grange Country Farm with Marton West Beck and Fairy Dell is aimed at increasing the number of people enjoying green spaces.

The £25,000 path has been built through Middlesbrough’s £9m Healthy Town Initiative.

The scheme aims to develop Newham Grange Country Farm as a walking and cycling centre.

Councillors will officially open the footpath on Thursday at 3pm.

The new route starts just before the underpass on the Timberland Trail that takes walkers safely under the A174.

It then heads down towards Marton West Beck and improvements have been made to an existing bridge over the beck.

The path then continues to a cycle path where it meets existing walking routes that lead to Fairy Dell and back to the farm.

Improvements to the area have included installing steps, widening and surfacing paths and adding hand rails.

Councillor Brenda Thompson, executive member for public health and sport, said: "This new footpath creates a wonderful link between some of Middlesbrough’s finest natural areas and I hope many people enjoy it in the years to come."
