THE final pieces of the giant sealife mosaic have being placed in their new home after the school it originally adorned was demolished in the summer.

It will now take centre stage in the Doorstep Green Park in Skinningrove, east Cleveland.

And the original artist, Philippa Threlfall, travelled to the village from her home in Somerset to see its new surroundings after putting it in place on the entrance to the former Rosecroft School at Loftus when it opened in 1963.

The relocation was the brainchild of Skinningrove residents, Barry Hunt and Tom Evans, who wanted to preserve the mosaic, created with stones and fossils collected from the beach.

The artist said: "It was my first big mural, I was 23 - now I'm 70. That's why I'm so pleased to get it back. Some are kept, some destroyed. This one's been kept and it's lovely.

"I knew it was happening and I've cancelled other things so I could come up."

The artwork was kept in storage for a few months until the park was ready for it to be installed.

Councillor Mary Lanigan, Redcar and Cleveland Council's cabinet member for highways, transportation and planning said: "I am delighted we have been able to complete this project.

" I'm sure the residents and visitors to Skinningrove will appreciate having a new piece of public art that could have been lost."
