THE atmosphere got hot and spicy as local experts sampled some specially created bangers as part of National Sausage Week.
Five teams of catering students from Middlesbrough College created their own sausage to tickle the taste buds with a wide variety of ingredients including chillies, garlic, spices and lemons.
The panel of judges was made up of award winning sausage maker Di Fletcher of Country Valley Foods, the managing director of Country Valley Foods and Newboulds James Munro and joint owner of Bay Horse Inn, Hurworth, near Darlington, Marcus Bennett.
The winner, Spicy Dorman Long, will be produced by Darlington's Country Valley Foods and sold in all 12 Newboulds stores across the area.
