YOUNG people are being urged to be more visible as the dark nights encroach.
And to encourage youngsters to be more safety aware Redcar and Cleveland Council gave away a free fluorescent hat, scarf, or set of gloves, to the first 50 children that the councils safety team met at the Allendale Shops, Ormesby.
Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to wear bright or fluorescent clothes during the day and reflective materials at night.
Councillor Mary Lanigan, cabinet member for highways, transportation and planning, said: "We want to make sure that all of the young people across the Borough stay safe whilst out and about this winter by following the top tips and making sure they can be seen by motorists."
