AN award-winning artist has returned to his native North-East to inspire the next generation of college students.
Vaughan Oliver, one of the most influential graphic designers in Britain over the past 30 years, drew on his decades of experience to give a one off master class to foundation degree graphics students at Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD).
Mr Oliver, 52, who was born in Sedgefield, County Durham, studied graphic design before moving to London. He has been responsible for some of the most iconic record sleeves of the 80s including Ultra Vivid Scene, Clan of Xymox, Frank Black, the Pixies, and the Cocteau Twins.
"I’ve always used my career to pursue my passions for music and art," he said.
"Today’s young designers have the benefit of major design influences from the 80s and 90s and some of the work I have seen here from first year students is much better than I was producing in my third year.
"The students here have really inspired me. It’s great to be among young people; it reminds you what you know and the college facilities here are outstanding.
"They have a great studio culture and excellent technology; in fact the students here are really lucky as not every college I visit has such a fantastic set up."
Graphic design tutor at CCAD Su Em Sans said: "Vaughan Oliver truly is one of the most inspirational graphic designers working today. "I have followed his work closely since his career began. He was a major influence to me when I was studying and it is an immense honour that he has come to CCAD to pass on his expertise to our students."
